LUBBOCK, Texas - This weekend marks the 40th annual Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, California, and for the third straight year, the Texas Tech track and field teams will be competing along side of the nation's best. The meet runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday and features high school, college and university, and invitational running categories.
Among the 17 college and university programs competing are Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Auburn, Boston College, Boise State, BYU, California, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Purdue, Stanford, SMU, Tennessee, UCLA, USC, Washington State and Wisconsin, among others. Several international runners will also be on hand, representing Australia, Canada, China, Great Britain, Jamaica, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Sweden and Venezuela. The meet traditionally draws some of the top world and Olympic athletes. Sprinter Marion Jones, who won two gold medals at last year's World Championships, will be running, plus several other medalists from the world meet in Athens, Greece.
The Red Raiders will be looking to achieve NCAA qualifying marks in the competitive field. Friday's events will begin at 4:30 p.m. with the women's 800 meters. Saturday's events will be primarily high school competition, plus many of the university level field events. Sunday's running events begin at 9 a.m.
