Njenga 10th at NCAA Track and Field Championships

BUFFALO, New York - Texas Tech track and field junior Michael Njenga (Nairobi, Kenya) claimed 10th place in the 5,000 meters at the 1998 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday. Njenga recorded a new season best time of 13 minutes 51.65 seconds at the UB Stadium on the campus of the State University of New York - Buffalo.
The meet concluded the 1998 outdoor track and field season for Njenga and the Texas Tech squad. Only the top eight runners earned All-America status. Big 12 Conference 5,000 champion Adam Goucher, of Colorado, took first place at the NCAA meet in the 5,000 with a time of 13:31.64 for a new track record. Njenga finished second in the event, behind Goucher, at the conference meet.
Njenga made his first appearance at the Division I outdoor championships. The transfer from Butler County Community College competed at the 1996 NJCAA indoor track championships and the 1995 and 1996 NJCAA cross country championships. He recorded his provisional qualifying time of 13:57.93 in the 5,000 at the Mt. SAC Relays in April.
