LUBBOCK, Tex. - The Texas Tech Red Raider Club surpassed the $1 million mark in cash gifts for the second straight year during its recent eight-week Lubbock fund drive, according the Senior Associate Athletic Director Steve Locke. Additionally, the drive achieved its 12th-straight record-setting effort, which will allow the Red Raider Club to raise over $2 million for the total year.
The Lubbock fund drive, which began in early May and ended last month, raised $1,058,338 for the Texas Tech athletic department, which was an increase of approximately $30,000 over last year's total. Almost 200 new members joined the Red Raider Club and over $70,000 was raised in new donations to the organization. The theme for this year's drive was "Showing our True Colors - Backing the Red and Black."
"We are extremely thrilled with the response we've received," said Locke, who has served as the Red Raider Club President since 1987. "Everybody in the Texas Tech community seems to have pulled together and supported athletics like never before. This successful fund drive is the culmination of a lot of hard work by a group of dedicated volunteers and the outstanding support of Red Raider fans.
The drive has increased every year since 1987 when it raised a total of $440,707. Funds raised primarily serve to cover the costs of room, board, fees and tuition for Texas Tech's student-athletes in the 17 sponsored sports.
"We believe Texas Tech has the best supporters in the country," said Athletic Director Gerald Myers. "This is a critical time for Texas Tech athletics and support of efforts like the Red Raider Club fund drive are crucial to our success. I want to sincerely thank everyone that contributed toward this record-setting drive."
