What is the Marsha Sharp Leadership Circle?
With the ever-changing landscape of college athletics effecting every athletic department in the nation, an emphasis on growth, expansion and excellence is vital to the success of intercollegiate athletic programs. Athletic opportunities must be provided to both men and women at the highest possible levels of competition while maintaining a first-class level of academic support.
With the rising cost of educational scholarships, Texas Tech University is faced with ever increasing needs that must be addressed in order for our teams to compete. While all of our sports are fully funded, additional expenses are incurred in order to pursue athletic and academic excellence. The Marsha Sharp Leadership Circle will provide our student-athletes with the opportunity to compete in additional tournaments, enhance recruitment, provide scholarship funding, and establish an overall atmosphere of athletic excellence.
Why Was the MSLC Enacted?
The Marsha Sharp Leadership Circle was enacted to generate revenue for the enhancement of women's athletic opportunities at Texas Tech University. The ultimate goal of the Marsha Sharp Leadership Circle is to provide our women student-athletes with the opportunity to excel in all facets of their collegiate experience. Funds generated are devoted to special projects and are for special uses which directly benefit those student-athletes and those programs.
Aren't Scholarships Funded?
With the rising cost of educational scholarships, Texas Tech University is faced with increasing needs that must be addressed in order for our teams to succeed. Annually, more than $1 million is spent on athletic scholarships in women's sports. While all of our sports are fully funded, additional expenses are incurred in order to pursue athletic and academic excellence. The MSLC provides our student-athletes with the opportunity to compete in additional events, it enhances recruitment and training, and it provides funding to establish an overall atmosphere of athletic excellence for each program. Contributions to the Marsha Sharp Leadership Circle also insure that the Jeannine McHaney Scholar Athlete Award continues.
Jeannine McHaney Scholar Athlete Award
Jeannine McHaney, the driving force behind the establishment--and success--of women's athletics at Texas Tech, was the first woman inducted into the Texas Tech Athletic Hall of Honor. Annually, a student-athlete in each women's sport is recognized as the Jeannine McHaney Scholar Athlete. The award winner exemplifies the standards established by Jeannine McHaney in the areas of academic achievement and athletic excellence as well as service to the community and the university.
