LUBBOCK, Texas -
The Texas Tech softball team opened its Big 12 home schedule in style Saturday by sweeping the nation's 24th ranked Missouri Tigers 4-3, 6-2 in a double header played at Texas Tech's on campus Intramural Fields.
The Red Raiders trailed 3-2 going into the bottom of the seventh inning in game one. Eva Harshman led off the seventh with a double to put the tying run in scoring position for Texas Tech. Lauren Warner reached base on a fielder's choice on which Harshman safely returned to second base and Stephanie Walls got to first on a fielder's choice when Harshman was put out at third base. A sacrifice bunt by Sandy Butler moved the Tech runners to second and third with two out. Then, with the game on the line, Jenny Kohler stepped to the plate for the Raiders and singled to drive in Warner and Walls.
Back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning set up Texas Tech's seventh inning heroics. The Red Raiders trailed 2-0 going into the bottom of the fourth, but Tamara Harrington sent a bomb over the left field fence and Paula Workman homered over the right field fence to even Tech and Missouri at two.
The two teams combined for four home runs in game one and six total in the double header on a day when strong gusts of wind blew toward center and left-center field throughout the afternoon.
Texas Tech lit up the scoreboard in game two of the double header with a five-run fourth inning and again home runs were the key. With one out in the inning, Kim Martinez, Tech's home run leader with eight on the season, got the Raiders started with a solo home run. Then, Workman plated Aimee Weathers with a double and Harshman singled to scored Workman. Lauren Warnder polished off the inning with a two-run home run.
Texas Tech added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning and then retired Missouri in order in the top of the seventh to complete the two-game sweep with a 6-2 win.
Amanda Renfro was phenomenal for the Red Raiders, pitching two-straight complete games while allowing only four earned runs on eight hits and striking out 15. With the two wins, Renfro moved her season mark to 17-12.
At the plate, the Red Raiders rung up 20 hits on the day as eight Texas Tech batters totaled two or more hits in the two games. Seven Raiders had RBI on the day, led by Warner, Workman and Kohler who had two each.
