LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech volleyball team enters Big 12 play this week with a 10-2 overall record. The Red Raiders finished second in the BYU Mizuno Classic this weekend in Provo, Utah with a 3-1 tournament record. Texas Tech defeated both Central Michigan and Northern Illinois both 3-0 but lost 3-0 to host and champion BYU. This week, Texas Tech begins Big 12 Conference play as the Red Raiders host both Texas A&M (Friday, 7 p.m.) and Texas (Saturday, 7 p.m.) in Lubbock Municipal Coliseum. Texas A&M and Texas are both ranked nationally. Texas Tech is 21-33 lifetime against Texas A&M and 7-46-2 against Texas. Last year, Texas Tech upset then-14th ranked Texas A&M in College Station, 3-2.
TEXAS TECH REACHES 600 ALL-TIME VICTORIES With its 15-3, 16-14, 15-4 victory Saturday against Northern Illinois in the BYU Mizuno Classic, the Texas Tech volleyball program reached its 600th program victory. The Central Michigan victory gave the Red Raiders their 599th win.
HILGERS NEEDS SIX DIGS TO BREAK TTU CAREER DIGS RECORD This weekend, Lisa Hilgers inched closer to breaking the Texas Tech career digs record. Entering the Texas A&M-Texas weekend, Hilgers needs just six digs to break Cristine Martins record of 1,323 career digs. Hilgers has 1,318 career digs. Hilgers began the season with 1,206 digs and has totaled 112 so far this season. She currently leads the team in digs per game. Martin played five years from 1993-97, which makes Hilgers accomplishment even more remarkable.
RED RAIDERS BREAK MATCH HITTING PERCENTAGE RECORD Texas Tech hits .586 against Central Michigan to break match record Texas Tech broke the program record for match hitting percentage with .586 outing against Central Michigan. The Red Raiders won 3-0. The old record of .507 (45-8-73) hitting percentage, set against SMU on September 30, 1986. The Red Raiders tagged Central Michigan for 43 kills and only two errors in 70 attempts for its new record of .586.
HILGERS, GARBER EARN ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS Two Red Raiders were named to the BYU Mizuno Classic All-Tournament squad. Setter Lisa Hilgers earned her third all-tournament team honor, while middle blocker Lori Garber garnered her second all-tournament honor on the season. For her career, Hilgers has been named to 11 total all-tournament squads in her career.
GARBER HAS GREAT TOURNAMENT Junior middle blocker Lori Garber has made a significant impact on the squad in 1998. Garber finished the tournament and week with a .517 hitting percentage. Her totals were 39 kills, nine errors, 58 attacks along with 11.0 total blocks (two solo/nine assists). Her biggest match came against Northern Illinois when she dominated for 21 kills and five total blocks. She also set an individual career high for hitting percentage (10-0-12, .833 vs. Central Michigan) and kills (21 vs. Northern Illinois) in a match over the weekend.

TEXAS TECH DEFEATS NORTHERN ILLINOIS 3-0 Garber torches Huskies for 21 kills. PROVO, Utah - Texas Tech used a career high 21-kill performance from junior transfer Lori Garber to defeat Northern Illinois15-3, 16-14, 15-4 in Techs final match of the three-match BYU Mizuno Classic. Northern Illinois (7-2) finished with a .102 (35-23-118) hitting percentage but gave Texas Tech trouble in the second game when they had three opportunities to win at 14 points. But Texas Tech stormed back to win game two 16-14 and eventually won game three 15-4. Texas Tech, which improved to 10-2 with the win, hit .327 (51-14-113) and dug 53 balls. Kristen Holmes added 10 kills and 15 digs, Heather Hughes finished with 13 digs while Courtney Putnam and Sonia Moric each had five kills apiece.

TECH POUNDS CENTRAL MICHIGAN Red Raiders break team match record for hitting percentage with .586 outing PROVO, Utah - Texas Tech broke a team match record for hitting percentage with a .586 outing against Central Michigan while registering a 15-4, 15-0, 15-1 victory in match two of the BYU Mizuno Classic. Texas Tech improves to 9-2 on the season while MAC opponent Central Michigan dropped to 2-4 overall. Texas Tech broke the old record of .507 (45-8-73) hitting percentage, set against SMU on September 30, 1986. The Red Raiders tagged Central Michigan for 43 kills and only two errors in 70 attempts for its new record of .586. Natalie Rives finished with 11 kills and a .588 percentage (11-1-17), Lori Garber hit .833 with 10 kills (10-0-12), while Courtney Putnam, Kristen Holmes and Sonia Moric each tallied five kills apiece. Holmes led Tech with six digs.
NO. 6 BYU DEFEATS TTU 3-0 Host Cougars hold Texas Tech to .174 hitting and block down 13 total attacks in registering a 15-6, 15-9, 15-7 victory PROVO, Utah - BYU used .330 hitting and limited Texas Tech to .174 hitting in registering a 15-6, 15-9, 15-7 home victory in the first match of the BYU Mizuno Classic. The victory improved No. 6 BYU to 6-1 on the season and dropped Texas Tech to 8-2 overall. BYU hit .330 (54-16-115) for the match and limited Texas Tech to .174 (37-18-109). The Cougars outblocked Texas Tech 13-7, outdug the Raiders 52-37 and outaced them 7-5. Texas Tech also committed seven reception errors, 18 attack errors and five blocking errors. The Cougars quickly grabbed a 7-1 lead in game one and never looked back. Tech battled back to within 7-5 but that was as close as the Raiders got as BYU won game one 15-6. Game two was closer as Tech trailed 9-8 before BYU rattled off three straight points to win 15-9. The Cougars won game three 15-7. Lori Garber led Texas Tech with eight kills while Kristen Holmes and Courtney Putnam tallied seven kills apiece. Holmes finished with a team-leading 10 digs and Garber led the Raiders with five total blocks.
HILGERS NAMED TOURNAMENT MVP Lisa Hilgers was named the Brions Grill Tournament Most Valuable Player at the conclusion of the tournament. At weeks end, Hilgers statistics included .303 hitting (15-5-33), 13.36 assists per game and 3.71 digs per game. All those statistics are above last years statistics. Kristen Holmes and Courtney Putnam both were named to the all-tournament team.
