Red Raiders Take Game Two from Oklahoma 8-3

NORMAN, Okla. - Texas Tech used outstanding pitching and five early runs to register an 8-3 decision against Oklahoma Saturday at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The win gives Texas Tech two victories in the three-game series with the third game scheduled for 1 p.m. today in Norman. Texas Tech improved to 31-8 overall and 12-4 in the Big 12 while Oklahoma dropped to 19-18 overall and 5-9 in the Big 12.
More importantly, Texas Tech advanced in the Big 12 standings with Texas' 4-2 victory against Baylor.
Texas Tech starter Kevin Tracey (8-1) earned the victory after pitching 5 2/3 innings. He allowed eight hits, one run (one ER) and walked three batters. Tracey also struck out two batters. Freshman reliever Steve Rowe pitched the final 3 1/3 innings for the first save of his career. Rowe allowed only one hit and two runs and struck out two batters.
Texas Tech jumped out to an early lead with a run in the first inning and four runs in the second inning. Chaz Eiguren's RBI single scored Jon Weber who reached base on a walk. Ryan Ruiz' RBI fielders choice and Jon Weber's three-run home run over the rightfield fence gave Texas Tech a 5-0 lead in the second inning. It was Weber's 11th homer of the season.
Tech added two more runs in the fifth inning when both Ruiz and Weber walked and Eiguren drove both home on a single up the middle. That put Tech up 7-0. Tech added an insurance run in the ninth when Chris Sampson's double scored Miles Durham from first base.
Oklahoma came back with one run in the sixth and one run in the seventh. The Sooners' Joe Graham drove home a run on a fielders' choice in the sixth inning while Casey Bookout's RBI triple and Hunter Covitz' sacrifice fly scored one run apiece in the seventh.
Oklahoma starter Nathan Sturdivant (3-3) took the loss for the Sooners.
Texas Tech is now on a seven game winning streak.
