Rice Ends Rutgers' NCAA Run

LUBBOCK (AP) -- Damon Thames went 3-for-4 with two RBI's and one run as Rice defeated Rutgers to stay alive in the NCAA baseball regionals on Saturday.
Rice (53-12) will face the loser of the UW-Milwaukee-Texas Tech match-up at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday for a berth in Sunday's championship game. The Owls were forced into the elimination bracket after falling to UW-Milwaukee 8-4 on Friday.
Rice jumped on the board early by scoring two runs in the top of the first inning after singles by Damon Thames and Justin Berg. Rice got three more runs in the sixth inning that included a homerun by leftfielder Charles Williams to seal the Rice victory.
Rutgers was led by Todd Speedy who went 1-for-4 and scored the Scarlet Knight's lone run after he sent a homer over the center field fence in the bottom of the seventh inning. With the loss, Rutgers has been eliminated from the tournament and finishes the season with a 37-21 mark.
