LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech senior pitcher Shane Wright was named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week by the Big 12 Conference Monday. Both the Big 12 Player and Pitcher of the Week are selected by a panel of media covering Big 12 baseball. Wright and Missouri shortstop Ryan Stegall were the recipients for games played Feb. 22-28.
Wright earns the honor for the third time in his career. The senior righthander from Topeka, Kansas opened Texas Tech's weekend series against Kansas with a 9.0 inning complete game against the Jayhawks. He struck out a career-high 12 batters and limited the Jayhawks to five runs, one walk, one earned run. He also held Kansas to a .161 batting average in earning an 8-1 victory. Texas Tech went on to record a three-game sweep of Kansas. Wright rooted for Kansas while growing up in Topeka.
Wright's selection also marks the second time this season that a Tech baseball player was named either Big 12 Pitcher or Player of the Week. Jon Weber was selected the Big 12 Player of the Week after the first week of the season.
Texas Tech (3-0 Big 12, 13-4 overall) plays New Mexico (7-10) tomorrow at Dan Law Field. Game time is 3 p.m.
