Tech Track and Field Successful at Abilene Christian

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech University track and field team recorded top performances Thursday at the ACU Track and Field Classic in Abilene. The team concluded the regular season schedule with the meet and will prepare for the Big 12 Championships beginning May 15.
Several Red Raiders raced to first place finishes at the meet. Desmond Johnson clocked a time of 46.50 seconds in the men's 400 meters for first, Ngozi Iwu finished with the top mark in the women's 400 at 55.28, Evette Turner paced the pack in the women's 800 in a time of 2:10.00, and Leigh Daniels placed first in the women's 3,000 with a time of 10:09.55. Freshman Shameron Turner tallied a pair third place marks in the 200 and 400, Michael Njenga placed second in the 1,500, and Dawn Charlier finished second in the women's 1,500.
Running alongside the Red Raiders were teams from meet hosts Abilene Christian, Army, North Texas, Angelo State, Southwest Texas, Wayland Baptist, Texas A&M-Commerce, Howard Payne, Sul Ross State, Tarleton State, South Plains College, Northwood, Odessa College and Ranger College.
Texas Tech will head to the 1998 Big 12 Conference Track and Field Championships May 15-17 in Columbia, Missouri. Hosted by the University of Missouri, the meet will take place at the Audrey J. Walton Track-Soccer Field-Stadium.
