LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech Chancellor John T. Montford accepted a $1.1 million donation from Patti and Alex Munson of Lubbock at a 10 a.m. press briefing Tuesday in the lobby of the Athletics Administration Building.
The gift will provide $500,000 in undergraduate scholarships for the women's basketball program, $400,000 for the creation of a women's basketball coaches endowment, $100,000 for the academic services building and $100,000 for programming at KOHM.
"On behalf of the Boardof Regents at Texas Tech University, we are extremely grateful of the Munson's commitment to excellence," said Montford. "We will long remember this commitment from Alex and Patty and we will long remember what you have done for Texas Tech."
Dr. Munson is a child psychiatrist and a vice president of Canyon Lakes Residential Treatment Center, a private adolescent psychiatric hospital located in Lubbock. Munson is actively affiliated with numerous medical associations, including the Texas Society of Psychiatric Physicians, the Texas Society of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the Texas Medical Association.
Mrs. Munson has served as office manager of her husband's medical practice since 1977. She also is active with the Texas Medical Association Alliance, the Texas Society of Psychiatric Physicians Auxiliary, the Lubbock Women's Club, and is the past president of the Lubbock-Crosby-Garza County Medical Society Auxiliary.
"For someone who attended the University of Texas and was involved in that facility for some 14 years, I am a born-again Red Raider," said Alex Munson.
The Munson gift will count toward the $300 million goal Texas Tech has set to raise in private donations as part of The Horizon Campaign. The Horizon Campaign has raised more than $180 million since it was officially launched on Feb. 6.
