LUBBOCK, Texas - No. 13 Texas Tech improved to 3-0 on the young season with 16-5 and 19-3 victories Saturday against Howard at Dan Law Field. With the losses, Howard drops to 0-6 on the season.
Texas Tech fell behind early in both games but then came back to win game one against the visiting Bison, 16-5. Howard jumped out to a 3-2 lead in the second inning but the Red Raiders rallied for seven runs in the fifth inning, coupled with two in the second and one in the third to lead 10-3. Tech's seven runs were fueled by Miles Durham's RBI single, Lance Woodcock's two RBI triple, Jon Weber's two RBI single and Josh Bard's two RBI single.
Weber drove in four RBI on 2-5 hitting, Ryan Ruiz scored two runs and walked five times, Marco Cunningham scored three times with three walks, Josh Bard went 2-6 with four RBI, Allen Marshall scored three times with two walks, Brennan Burns went 0-1 with three walks, Joey Hart drove in two on 2-5 hitting and Lance Woodcock finished 2-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Texas Tech finished with only 11 hits and 14 RBI but Howard pitchers walked a total of 17 Texas Tech batters.
Texas Tech's Brad Ralston (1-0) struck out seven batters, allowed six hits and three runs (one earned run) and one walk in seven innings. He earned his first victory on the season. Michael Hughes tallied the loss for Howard. Bodie Simpson and Clancy Fossum pitched the final six outs for Texas Tech.
The Red Raiders used a seven-run sixth inning to put away a 19-3 win in game two. Outfielder Miles Durham led Texas Tech with two home runs, four runs scored, four RBI on 3-5 hitting. Jon Weber drove in six runs on 3-4 hitting including a seventh inning grand slam, Josh Bard went 4-5 with a triple and double, Allen Marshall went 1-3 with a three-run home run and Marco Cunningham homered and finished 3-5 with three runs to lead Tech.
Righthander Brandon Roberson pitched 7.0 innings and allowed five hits, three runs (two earned) and two walks. He struck out 11 Howard batters. Steve Rowe (8th inning) and Cesar Gutierrez (9th inning) finished off the game.
Texas Tech plays the final fourth game of the four-game series tomorrow (Sunday) at 2 p.m. at Dan Law Field. Tech then hosts TCU on Tuesday in Lubbock at 3 p.m.
