Texas Tech Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader against New Mexico

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech defeated New Mexico in both games of a doubleheader Tuesday 11-7 in the seven inning first game and 4-3 in a nine inning game three at Texas Tech's Dan Law Field. The wins improve Texas Tech to 17-8 overall and drop New Mexico to 13-15. Texas Tech (17-8) is next in action tomorrow (Wednesday, March 18) against Valley City State University at Dan Law Field in Lubbock, Texas. Game time is 1 p.m.
In game one, Texas Tech scored a run in the fifth inning and three in the sixth inning to break a 7-7 tie and cruise to an 11-7 victory. Tech sophomore reliever Steve Watkins pitched the final 3 1/3 innings for his first victory on the season. Watkins allowed only one hit and struck out two in his three innings.
The Red Raiders finished the game with 12 hits and drove in 10 runs. Keith Ginter went 2-3 with two runs scored an RBI, Brennan Burns hit a home run and went 1-3 with two RBI and two runs, Kevin Jordan hit a home run and went 2-4 with two RBI and a run scored, Jason Landreth went 1-2 with two runs scored, Miles Durham finished 2-3 with an RBI and Jason Huth went 2-3 with two RBI.
Texas Tech held off a late New Mexico rally to win game two 4-3. Starter Shane Wright (5-1) pitched a nine inning complete game in earning his fifth victory on the season. He struck out three batters, allowed 10 hits, three runs (all earned) and walked only two in his victory.
Tech hit two home runs in the second inning to grab a 2-0 lead. Brandon Buckley hit his first home run of the season and first in 102 plate appearances and Jason Landreth followed with his fifth shot of the year. The Red Raiders added two more in the third inning to go up 4-0 on a two-run RBI single by Kevin Jordan. Wright held off the Lobos who came within 4-3 in the eighth inning. Landreth finished 2-3 with an RBI and run scored while Jordan finished 1-4 with two RBI.
