Texas Tech Begins 1999 Baseball Practice

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech baseball program began practice for its 1999 season Thursday at the Texas Tech Athletic Training Center and Dan Law Field. Since spring semester classes have yet to start, the Red Raiders practiced twice.
Tech went through infield drills and pitching coverage drills in the morning session at the Athletic Training Center. The afternoon session at Dan Law Field consisted of batting practice followed by a scrimmage. Seniors Shane Wright and Brad Ralston each started off the scrimmage on the mound.
"We're excited to start practice," Texas Tech head baseball coach Larry Hays said. "We've got a lot of things to work out with only a few weeks to prepare. This team in a lot of ways, ought to be better than last year but that doesn't mean it's going to be."
Last year Texas Tech finished 44-20, won the Big 12 Tournament title and appeared in an NCAA Regional for the fourth consecutive season. The Red Raiders will enter the 1999 season nationally ranked 13th by Collegiate Baseball, 19th by Baseball America and 20th by USA Baseball Weekly (coaches' poll). The final college baseball poll, selected by The Sporting News, has yet to be released.
Tomorrow Texas Tech will practice at 8 a.m. inside the Athletic Training Center and at 2 p.m. at Dan Law Field.
Texas Tech season tickets are available by calling the Texas Tech Athletic Ticket Office at (806) 742-4412. Big 12 Baseball Tournament tickets are also available by calling the Oklahoma City All Sports Association at (405) 236-5000. The Big 12 Tournament, which attracted a record-setting 113,108 fans last year for the four-day event, has been expanded from six to eight teams and will take place at Oklahoma City's Southwestern Bell Ballpark at Bricktown from May 19-23.
