LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech Red Raider baseball team will open its season Friday at 3 p.m. against visiting Howard University at Dan Law Field. Texas Tech will also play Howard in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday and a single game at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Howard (0-3) enters the weekend after losing its first series to Arizona State. Arizona State, a team that advanced to the College World Series last year, downed Howard 23-0, 23-1 and 14-0 in its opening weekend in Tempe, Ariz.
"We are pretty anxious to get the season started," Texas Tech head coach Larry Hays said. "We've had a pretty short preseason and we've had a few injuries and sickness occur but we need to start the season. We are still experimenting at several positions and hope we can play well tomorrow."
Senior second baseman Jason Huth broke his left thumb in a practice two weeks ago. Huth should be back in the lineup in a few weeks. Several other Red Raiders have had flu-like symptoms over the first three weeks of practice. Spring practice began on January 14.
Senior righthanded pitcher Shane Wright, who was 14-1 last year with a 2.71 ERA for Texas Tech, will get the start on opening day. He has a streak of eight complete games in a row dating back to last season. Senior Brad Ralston and junior transfer Brandon Roberson will start both games of the doubleheader on Saturday, while junior tranfer Kevin Tracey will likely start on Sunday. Texas Tech head coach Larry Hays plans to use Wright for Tech's TCU game at Dan Law Field next Tuesday (3 p.m.).
The first 100 people through the doors at Dan Law Field of each game receive an Outback promotional item. Individual tickets are $7 and $5 for students.
