Texas Tech Claims Big 12 Tournament Title

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- Texas Tech won the 1998 Big 12 Conference Tournament championship Sunday with a 14-7 victory against Texas A&M at the Southwestern Bell Brickyard Ballpark in Oklahoma City. Texas Tech finished the tournament with a 4-1 record and now will enter a NCAA Regional with a 43-18 record. Regional pairings will be announced Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. CT on ESPN.
Texas Tech jumped out on top early with an eight-run second inning to take a 9-0 lead. That left Texas A&M battling back the entire evening.
Catcher Josh Bard finished the tournament as the Big 12 Most Valuable Player. He finished the game 1-5 with an RBI. Ryan Ruiz went 3-6 with an RBI and run scored, Keith Ginter went 1-4 with two runs scored, Kevin Jordan went 3-4 with three runs and three RBI, Jason Landreth finished 2-4, a home run with two RBI and two runs, Brandon Buckley went 4-5 with three runs and an RBI, Mark Austry went 3-4 with two runs, a home run and four RBI.
Reliever Zach Stewart (2-0) pitched the final 4 1/3 innings for the victory. He allowed six hits and one run (one ER) and struck out five. Eric Cooper started the game and went 4 2/3 innings. He allowed six hits, six runs (6 ER) and struck out two batters.

*Texas Tech won its first postseason tournament since winning the 1995 Southwest Conference title in College Station, Texas in 1995.
*When Kevin Jordan was plunked by Clancy Fossum in the seventh inning, he tied the Texas Tech season record for times hit by a pitch with 11 on the season.
*Texas Tech's Jason Landreth (13-game) and Josh Bard (10-game) continued their hitting streaks.
*Jason Landreth gunned down his third runner at home on the tournament.
