Texas Tech Defeats UT-Pan American in Doubleheader

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech defeated UT-Pan American 6-4 and 22-4 in a Saturday baseball doubleheader at Dan Law Field. The win improved No. 13 Texas Tech to 22-5 overall and dropped UT-Pan America to 21-11. The wins also improved Texas Tech's home game winning streak to 21 straight games.
Texas Tech starter Shane Wright pitched his fourth complete game of the season in defeating UT-Pan American in game one. The senior struck out 11 batters, allowed 11 hits and four runs (3 earned) and walked none in registering his sixth victory on the season.
UT-Pan American starter Omar Ortiz held Tech scoreless for the first three innings but the Raiders erupted for three runs in the fourth on a Jon Weber solo home run, a Scott Holzhauer RBI double and a Mark Austry RBI single. UT-Pan American battled back with a run in the sixth and run in the eighth on a triple by Andy Wallace and a groundout RBI from Steve Garza in the sixth inning and an RBI single from Garza in the eighth.
Tech, however rallied for three runs in the eighth to keep and upset from happening. A wild pitch scored Jason Huth from third, Marco Cunningham scored on a Ryan Ruiz fielder's choice and Allen Marshall drove in a run on a single.
UT-Pan American's Omar Ortiz took the loss after going the complete game 8.0 innings and allowing only four this and six runs (four ER). He struck out 11 batters.
In game two, Texas Tech used a seven-run fourth inning to defeat UT-Pan American 22-4. The Red Raiders jumped on top with five runs in the first two innings. Tech took a 2-0 first inning lead with a two-RBI double from David O'Keeffe and extended its lead to 5-0 with three runs in the second inning on Brennan Burn's two-RBI single and Marco Cunningham's RBI single. Tech then put the game away with a seven-run fourth inning. Jon Weber drove in two RBI on a single, Brennan Burns drove in two more on a double, Scott Holzhauer singled home another run to put Tech up 12-0 as UT-Pan American went through three pitchers before the end of the inning.
Holzhauer finished the game 3-5 with four runs, five RBI and a home run, O'Keeffe went 2-4 with a run and three RBI, Burns finished 2-3 with two runs and four RBI and Ryan Ruiz went 0-1 with four walks and four runs scored.
Kevin Tracey (6-1) earned the victory in game two after going the first five innings and allowing six hits, no runs and striking out four batters while UT-Pan American starter Jason Bottenfield (5-2) took the loss.
Game three of the three-game series is tomorrow at Dan Law Field. The first pitch is at 1:00 p.m.
