LUBBOCK, Texas - Games two and three of the Texas Tech-Nebraska baseball series at Dan Law Field have been cancelled due to heavy rains. The two teams played five innings of game one on Friday before lightning and heavy, consistent rain forced two delays before postponement. Friday's game was to be rescheduled before Saturday's doubleheader. Friday's game, considered the "final" game of the series will count toward the records of both teams as Texas Tech defeated Nebraska 10-2 in the five innings. Games two and three could not be rescheduled for Sunday due to Nebraska's final exam schedule.
With the victory, Texas Tech head coach Larry Hays won his 500th career game at Texas Tech. His record with the Red Raiders now stands at 500-253-1. Hays needs only five victories to become the ninth coach in college baseball history to win 1,200 career games.
Nebraska (13-9 Big 12, 30-15 overall) grabbed an early lead in the first inning as Jamal Strong and Adam Shabala both singled and Jeff Hedman and Justin Cowan each drove them in on a single and fielder's choice respectively.
Texas Tech quickly battled back to go up 3-2 in the bottom of the first as Marco Cunningham doubled and Ryan Ruiz drove Cunningham in on a single. Jon Weber singled and Josh Bard followed with an RBI single. Tech scored its third run on a double play ball. Tech added another run in the third when Bard's double drove home Marco Cunningham. The Red Raiders put Nebraska away with a six-run fifth inning. Chaz Eiguren's three-run home run sparked the rally along with Bard's RBI single and Jason Huth's RBI double.
Red Raider starter Shane Wright earned a complete game after going the full 5.0 innings and allowing eight hits and two runs. Wright is now 8-3 on the season while Nebraska starter Scott Fries (6-5) took the loss in 4.1 innings pitched. Fries allowed 12 hits and 10 runs.
Bard led Texas Tech with a 3-3 three-RBI performance, Ryan Ruiz went 3-4 with an RBI and two runs, David O'Keeffe went 2-3 and Jason Huth finished 2-3 with two RBI.
Texas Tech is next in action on Monday when the Red Raiders host Wayland Baptist for a 2 p.m. start at Dan Law Field. The game was added to the schedule to make up for the Nebraska cancellations. Tech will play at TCU on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
