WICHITA, Kansas - Texas Tech split a doubleheader with Kansas State losing game one 9-7 and winning game two 9-8 Saturday at Wichita's Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Game three of the three-game series is tomorrow (Sunday) at 1 p.m.
Texas Tech (36-11, 16-6 Big 12) rallied from behind to win game two 9-8. Josh Bard's two-run home run in the top of the ninth led the Red Raiders to victory. Trailing 8-7 with Ryan Ruiz on first base, Bard slammed a 1-0 pitch over the right centerfield wall off Kansas State reliever Tim Johnson. It was Bard's tenth home run of the season.
The Red Raiders then needed three outs for the victory. Reliever Chris Sampson (2-1), inserted in the final out of the eighth inning, shut down the Wildcats, allowing one hit and striking out three batters to earn his second victory of the season.
Tech jumped ahead 5-2 in the third inning with five runs. Bard's two-RBI double keyed and two Wildcat errors keyed the rally off Kansas State's Derek Anderson. Anderson went 7 1/3 innings and allowed nine hits, seven runs (five ER), three walks and struck out seven batters.
But Kansas State (19-23, 6-14 Big 12) was not finished as the Wildcats came back after trailing 6-2. The Wildcats scored three runs in the fifth on a Quinn Cravens three-run home run, added two more in the sixth on a Mark English solo home run and Chad Tabor RBI single and went ahead in the eighth on a Kyle Boyer RBI single. That set the table for Bard's home run.
Tech starter Kevin Tracey went 5.0 innings and allowed eight hits, five runs (five ER) and struck out one batter. Brandon Roberson pitched 2 2/3 innings while striking out two and gave way to Chris Sampson. Chaz Eiguren finished with a career-high four hits, Bard went 2-4 with four RBI, a double, home run and two runs, Scott Holzhauer went 2-5 with two runs and Ryan Ruiz went 2-4 with three runs.
Kansas State defeated the Red Raiders in game one 9-7. It was the first time in Big 12 history that Kansas State defeated Texas Tech. With the doubleheader, Tech is now 7-1 against Kansas State in the Big 12.
Texas Tech took advantage early, building a 4-0 lead in the second inning on RBI singles from Jon Weber, Scott Holzhauer and an RBI double from Josh Bard, along with a second inning solo home run from Lance Woodcock. After Tech went up 6-2, Kansas State rallied for a six-run fifth inning to take a 7-6. The Wildcats bunched together seven hits for a 7-6 lead and ousted Tech starter Shane Wright.
Tech could manage only one more run, an RBI single from Ryan Ruiz. Kansas State's Tom Henshaw (1-0) went away with the victory while reliever Tim Johnson earned a save.
Scott Holzhauer went 3-3 with an RBI, Bard went 2-5 with three RBI and a home run, Lance Woodock homered and went 2-4 with two RBI and Ryan Ruiz went 2-5 with a run and RBI. Starter Shane Wright (7-3) earned the loss after pitching 4 1/3 innings, allowing 11 hits and seven runs (six ER).
