LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech All-American Alicia Thompson was picked ninth by the New York Liberty in the 1998 WNBA draft held earlier today in New York.
Thompson, a senior forward from Big Lake, Texas, led the Lady Raiders in scoring with 23.2 points and 8.9 rebounds per game this season. She finished her career at Texas Tech as the school's second leading scorer with 2,156 points. Prior to the Kodak team, Thompson was selected to the Associated Press, United States Basketball Writers and the Women's Basketball Journal All-America first teams. Thompson was also named the Big 12 Player of the Year and the Big 12 Tournament Most Valuable Player.
The WNBA will tip off thier season on June 11, when Lifetime broadcasts its first of 10 televised regular season games with the Cleveland Rockers hosting the New York Liberty at Gund Arena.
