Track & Field Concludes Big 12 Championships

LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Techs mens and womens track and field teams wrapped up the third and final day of competition at the 1998 Big 12 Championships in Columbia,Mo. The Red Raider men finished in 11th place, while the women tied for 10th overall.
The highlight of the day, for the Red Raiders, was Michael Njenga who finished in fifth place in overall individual scores. Njenga, a senior transfer from Butler County Community College, placed second in the mens 5,000 meter and 10,000 meter runs. In the 10,000m, Njenga ran a time of 29 minutes and 40.09 seconds to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships. Rounding out the leading scoring for the men, was Desmond Johnson who turned in a sixth place performance in the 400m. For the Red Raider women, the spotlight belonged to junior Evette Turner who placed third in the 1,500m to provisionally qualify for the NCAAs. Turner also turned in a third place finish in the 3,000m, with a time of 9:52.13. In other womens action, Amy Peters finished in fourth place in the 100m hurdles, and Kaneisha Polk took fourth in the long jump. Polk leaped a distance of 1909.00.
Five Red Raiders will now focus their attention on the upcoming NCAA Championships. Texas Tech has provisionally qualified five student-athletes: Dion Miller in the 100 and 200 meters, Michael Njenga in the 5,000 and 10,000, Crystal Harlan in the high jump, Kaneisha Polk in the triple jump, and Evette Turner in the 1,500.
