LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech University men's and women's track and field teams completed the first day of competition with a fifth place finish at the Big 12 Track and Field Championships at the Audrey J. Walton Track-Soccer Field-Stadium in Columbia, Mo. Junior Michael Njenga led both squads with a second place finish in the 10,000 meter run with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 29 minutes and 40.09 seconds.
Njenga, a transfer from Butler County Community College, competed in the 10,000 m for the first time this season. Following Njenga in the 10,000m was senior Jason Winkle in 18th place with a time of 34:26.12.
On the women's side, junior Evette Turner continued her successful ways with a third place finish in the women's 3,000 meter run with a time of 9:52.13. Dawn Charlier and Kristen Koppes rounded out the 3,000m with 10th and 13th place respectively.
In the long jump, Kaneshia Polk finished in fourth place with a 6.02m leap. The jump was Polk's longest of the outdoor season. Rounding out the scoring for the women was Leigh Daniel, who finished in fifth place in the women's 10,000 meters. Daniel recorded a time of 36:43.87 in her first 10,000 meter race of the season.
The Red Raiders will take their fifth place standings into tomorrow's second day of competition in Columbia, Mo. The Texas Tech men will look to improve their 10th place finish in 1997, while the women look to better a 12th place finish from a year ago.
