LUBBOCK, Texas - Several Texas Tech University track and field athletes will have one final opportunity to qualify for the 1998 NCAA Outdoor Championships by running at the Georgia Tech-Reebok Invitational on Saturday, May 23. The meet will take place on the Georgia C. Griffin Track in Atlanta with over 50 collegiate teams competing. Field events are set to begin at 9 a.m. with running events starting at 1 p.m.
Among the Red Raiders scheduled to make the trip are Kaneshia Polk, Dion Miller, Desmond Johnson and Evette Turner. Additional athletes may also be competing. Polk has provisionally qualified for the NCAA meet in the triple jump, after recording a leap of 41 feet, 5.25 inches at the Big 12 Championships last weekend. Turner also just set a provisional time at the conference meet, crossing the line with just .01 seconds to spare in the 1500.
Miller provisionally qualified in two events, the 100 meters and 200 meters. His times in both events are just under the provisional mark, as he will look to secure a spot to nationals in his senior season. Johnson has yet to earn a bid to the NCAAs, but is on the verge in the 400 meters. His best time this season is 46.50 seconds. Both Johnson and Miller are part of the 4x100 relay unit that has already provisionally qualified with a time of 39.65.
In addition to those scheduled to make the trip, two other Red Raiders have set provisional marks. Michael Njenga has qualified in the 5,000 meters and 10,000, and Crystal Harlan achieved a provisional mark in the high jump.
The NCAA Championships are scheduled for June 3-6 in Buffalo, New York. A list of qualifiers will be available next week.
