June 21, 1999 | Women's Basketball
LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's basketball team signed 6-1 forward Aleah Johnson of South Plains College to a National Letter of Intent earlier today. Johnson is the second SPC transfer to sign with Tech in a year and the third since 1991.
A 1998 Kodak Women's All-American, Johnson averaged a team high 23.4 points per game, which led the Western Junior College Athletic Conference and ranked third nationally. She also grabbed 7.3 rebounds per game, which was seventh in the conference. Johnson also led the league in field goal percentage, hitting 58.8 percent of her shots and was 10th in free throw shooting with a mark of 68.4 percent.
A two-time All-WJCAC selection, she was recently named to the National Junior College Athletic Association All-Region 5 first team for the second consecutive season.
As a freshman at SPC, Johnson averaged 14.8 points per game, the eighth highest mark in the conference. She also grabbed 4.7 boards per game and was ranked second in the league in field goal percentage with a mark of 57.1.
A product of Carrollton, Texas, Johnson averaged 11.0 points, 6.6 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game during her playing days at Newman Smith High School. She was a three-time all-district selection and named the District 11-5A Newcomer of the Year in 1996.
Johnson joins 6-2 center Alison Cudnoski of Lubbock Monterey, 6-1 center Tanisha Ellison of Alief Elsik and 6-0 guard Amber Tarr of Ozona, who all signed with Tech in November.
Johnson is the fifth Lady Texan to come to Texas Tech. Current Lady Raider Angie Braziel transferred last season as did her predecessors Sheryl Swoopes, Vicki McKenzie and Kelly Schilling.
