Tech Returns Home to Face New Mexico
The 10th-ranked Lady Raiders return to action after the holiday break
with a home contest against New Mexico Tuesday night. The Lobos are the
fifth Western Athletic Conference team the Lady Raiders have faced so far this
season. Both teams are riding extended winning streaks - Texas Tech has
won its last nine games while New Mexico looks for its fifth straight
victory.

Lady Raider Head Coach Marsha Sharp
One of the most respected and well-known coaches in Texas Tech history,
head coach Marsha Sharp is 386-126 (.754) in her 17th year at the helm
of the Lady Raiders. The 1998 Big 12 Coach of the Year, she has led the
Lady Raiders to eight NCAA Tournament appearances, seven consecutive and five
NCAA Sweet 16 appearances in six years, including the NCAA National
Championship in 1993. While in the SWC, Coach Sharp and the Lady Raiders
never finished below third, they won or shared the last five
championships,
and they captured three Post Season Classic titles. Sharp captured her
350th career victory during the 1997 NCAA Tournament when on March 16
Tech defeated Montana, 47-45, in Palo Alto, Calif.
A 1974 graduate of Wayland Baptist University, Sharp was named National Coach of the Year in 1993 and 1994. She also reaped SWC Coach of the Year honors seven times, five consecutively. Sharp needs 14 victories to eclipse the 400 career-win mark.

Wrap-Up of the Ala Moana Hotel Paradise Classic
The Lady Raiders captured its second tournament title of the
1998-99 season, winning all three games in Honolulu. After beating
James Madison (71-38) and Loyola Marymount (82-59), Texas Tech defeated host
Hawaii by the score of 67-63 for the tournament crown. Senior post
Angie Braziel was named the tournament MVP, collecting a three-game total of
59 points and 24 rebounds. Junior forward Keith Dickerson was also named
to the All-Tournament team. Dickerson scored a career-high 18 points
against Loyola Marymount and added a career-high 14 rebounds against James
Madison. Against Hawaii, she tallied 13 points and nine boards.
Angie Braziel scored all of her 19 points in the second half. After playing poorly in the first half, the Lady Raiders came back in
the second half to shoot 71 percent. Texas Tech led 16-11 with 9:22
remaining in the first half before Hawaii went on a 11-0 run to take a 28-25
halftime lead. Hawaii shot 50 percent from the field in the first half, compared
with 33 percent for Texas Tech. Braziel dominated the second half,
scoring 10 consecutive points for the Lady Raiders as they took a 45-44 lead
with 11:03 remaining in the game, a lead they would not relinquish.
Rene Hanebutt and Angie Braziel each scored 20 points Tuesday night to lead No. 10 Texas Tech to a 82-59 victory over Loyola Marymount at the Ala Moana Hotel Paradise Classic. Hanebutt scored 17 points in the first half, then sat out most of the second half after the Lady Raiders built a big lead. She was 6-of-12 from the field, including 5-of-7 from three-point range. Keitha Dickerson added 18 points and 11 rebounds for Texas Tech. Loyola Marymount (3-7) came within 13 points with 9:41 remaining in the game before Texas Tech pulled away again.
Angie Braziel poured in a game-high 20 points to lead No. 10 Texas Tech over James Madison 71-38 Monday in the opening day of the Ala Moana Hotel Paradise Classic.
The Lady Raiders (8-1) went up 44-24 on a 19-7 run to begin the second half en route to their seventh straight win. The 6-foot-3 Braziel sparked the first half with 12 points and added four rebounds and three blocked shots in 27minutes of play. Katrisa O'Neal contributed 14 points and Kristi Washington added 12 as Texas Tech shot 63 percent from the floor in the second half after hitting only 41 percent in the opening period. The Lady Raiders led 25-17 lead at halftime, as the teams combined for 27 turnovers - 15 by James Madison (5-5) - in the first half.
About New Mexico
Under the direction of fifth-year head coach Don Flanagan, the
Lobos enter Tuesday's game with an 8-2 record after the holiday break.
The Lobos haven't played since Dec. 19 and ride a four-game winning streak
coming into Lubbock. New Mexico's two losses came at the hands of
Missouri-Kansas City on Nov. 27 and Northwestern State on Nov. 28.
Three Lobo starters average in double figures, led by sophomore forward Jennifer Williams who collects 14.9 points per game while guard Sonya Bryant averages 12.9 points and center Katie Kern adds 10.5 points per game. Williams also tops the squad in rebounds with 7.1 boards per contest.
As a team, New Mexico shoots 43.6% from the floor, but struggles from three-point range, hitting only 29.5% of its shots from behind the arc. New Mexico holds its opponents to a 34.8 shooting percentage. The Lobos score 65.1 points per contest while allowing 55.7 opponent points.
The Series Record...
Texas Tech holds a perfect 6-0 mark against the Lobos. The last
time these two teams met was Dec. 20, 1997, as Tech edged out a 65-62
win
over the Lobos in Albuquerque. Angie Braziel scored 19 points and
grabbed
13 rebounds for the Lady Raiders.
A Look Ahead ...
The Lady Raiders open up the 1999 Big 12 Conference season on
the
road with an afternoon contest against Baylor at Waco. Gametime is set
for
1:00 p.m. and will be televised on FOX Sports Southwest (cable) as part
of
the Big 12 television package.
After the brief stint in Waco, Texas Tech returns home for two home games - Jan. 6 against Oklahoma (7:00 p.m. start) and Jan. 9 against Kansas State (3:00 p.m.). The Kansas State contest will also be televised on FOX Sports Southwest (cable).

Senior post Angie Braziel collected her second MVP tournament honor at the Ala Moana Hotel Paradise Classic. She also earned the MVP title at the Gene Hackerman Rice Invitational earlier in December.
Junior forward Keitha Dickerson collected a career-high 18 points against Loyola Marymount and a career-high 14 rebounds against James Madison. She also recorded her first double-double of the season and the second of her career vs. the Lions. Dickerson earned an All-Tournament team spot for her efforts at the Ala Moana Hotel Paradise Classic.
The Lady Raiders have won nine consecutive games and have won 22 of its last 24 games, dating back to Feb. 4, 1998.
Sophomore guard Katrisa ONeal made her first collegiate start against James Madison due to the injury of senior guard Julie Lake.
Head coach Marsha Sharp needs 14 victories to eclipse the 400-career win mark. During her previous 16 years as head coach at Tech, Sharp has averaged 23.5 wins per season.
Junior guard Melinda Schmucker tallied a season-high 13 assists against James Madison.
The Lady Raiders are struggling from the charity stripe, posting a season-low 29.6 free throw percentage (8-of-27) against Loyola Marymount. Over the last three games, Tech was 20-of-50 (40%) from the free throw line.
