SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Big 12 Conference Chief Executive Officers and Athletics Directors formally approved the site for the fourth Dr Pepper Big 12 Conference Football Championship Game as the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, for Saturday, December 4, 1999.
"We are pleased that we have reached agreement with the city of San Antonio and the San Antonio Bowl Association (dba Alamo Bowl) to host the 1999 Dr Pepper Big 12 Football Championship," said Big 12 Commissioner Kevin L. Weiberg. "San Antonio is a great destination for fans with great atmosphere and many local attractions. We are looking forward to the continued growth of the football championship, and its history of producing exciting, unpredictable outcomes should make for a great game in San Antonio."
Over 190,000 fans have attended the first three Dr Pepper Big 12 Football Championship games. In 1997 the game in San Antonio, featuring Nebraska and Texas A&M, was played before 64,824 fans, the largest football crowd ever at the Alamodome.
"The football championship game in 1997 was a tremendous success and we look forward to another one in 1999," stated Big 12 Senior Associate Commissioner Donnie Duncan.
The Dr Pepper Big 12 Football Championship has been a showcase for Big 12 football and has aroused interest in non-Big 12 cities such as San Antonio and St. Louis. The winners of the North and South Divisions of the Big 12 Conference meet in this contest after five-game intradivisional play and three matchups with opponents on a rotating basis from the opposite division.
