LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech head football coach Spike Dykes called Sunday?s practice ?nothing to write home about? after the Red Raiders worked out at the grass practice fields southeast of Jones Stadium.
Dykes had hoped for a more crisp practice after an off day Saturday and with just one workout in shoulder pads and helmets Sunday. The Red Raiders practiced for just under two hours, with much of the workout devoted to teaching and recognition.
?We have a long, long way to go and a short time to get there,? Dykes said. ?I was really disappointed with our effort today. I thought it would be better with the day off.?
Most of Sunday?s practice kept the offense and defense on separate fields working in individual position groups or in team periods against scout teams. Offensive and defensive skill position players did get some work against one another in pass skeleton drills. As usual, there was special teams attention at the beginning of practice and then again at the end.
The Red Raiders return to the two-a-day routine Monday and will continue that schedule through next week. With the season-opener at Arizona State two weeks away, Texas Tech will practice at 7:30 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. for another week before getting into game week preparations.
There is a closed scrimmage scheduled for later this week and then a situational scrimmage scheduled for next Saturday morning prior to ?Meet the Raiders Day? that evening. ?Meet the Raiders Day? is slated to get underway at 5 p.m. at Raider Alley (old SWC Circle).
The Red Raiders and the Sun Devils kick off the 1999 season Sept. 6 in a game scheduled to be televised by Fox Sports Net. The 7 p.m. CDT kickoff at Sun Devil Stadium will mark the first meeting ever between Texas Tech and Arizona State.
