LUBBOCK, Texas - While not denying there are still miles to go before Texas Tech opens its 1999 football season at Arizona State, Red Raider head coach Spike Dykes said there was positive progress during a 90-minute closed scrimmage Wednesday.
?Nobody would argue that we have a long way to go, but we have also come a long way,? Dykes said. ?It was a good scrimmage. We got a lot done.
?This film will be a great teaching tool for us as we start focusing on Arizona State tomorrow,? Dykes said. ?We can get started with a full component of players. We have a few bumps and bruises, but nobody in really bad shape.?
Dykes said tailback and Heisman candidate Ricky Williams came out of the scrimmage with a bruised right shin, but is expected to be back at work Thursday morning. Tight end J.P. Jansen was held out with a sprained shoulder and is day-to-day.
Senior fullback Sammy Morris had a productive morning rushing for 29 yards and a TD. Morris also caught two passes for 48 yards, including a 44-yard TD reception from Rob Peters. Freshman running back Shaud Williams continued to impress. Williams scored on runs of 1 and 6 yards. He finished the morning with 16 yards on five carries.
?The offensive highlight of the scrimmage was the pass to Sammy,? Dykes said. ?The defensive highlight was the interception return by Ryan Aycock. The kicking game was better than we expected.?
Aycock, a true freshman safety from Lubbock Coronado, picked off a long pass late in the scrimmage and returned it 52 yards.
?The first defense looked good and cohesive. They are playing well together,? Dykes said. ?We need more consistency from the first offense, but overall it was a pretty good day.?
Senior flanker Brien Burchett caught three passes for 36 yards and a touchdown. Peters threw for 98 yards and a TD, while backup Kliff Kingsbury passed for 90 yards and a TD.
Two-a-day drills resume Thursday with practices at 7:30 a.m. and 1:15 p.m.
