LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's tennis team dropped a close match to Abilene Christian Wednesday afternoon in action at the Athletic Training Center on the Texas Tech campus. The Wildcats defeated the Red Raiders 5-4. Texas Tech drops to 0-1 on the year while Abilene Christian moves on to 1-0.
"I think we got good play from the top of our lineup, you just hate to lose these close matches", Texas Tech coach Virginia Brown said. "They have a good team, and with our youth it was tough to overcome. I think maybe some of our freshmen were a little nervous with it being their first match."
Tech received winning performances at the No's. 1, 2 and 3 spots, but were swept in the bottom half of the order. ACU took two out of the three doubles matches to square away the match.
Senior Amanda Earhart won her match at the No. 1 position against ACU's Sarah Taweel, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2. Ayako Suzuki, playing in her first match for Texas Tech, earned a win at the No. 2 spot, defeating Lucey Jordan 6-4, 6-4. Freshman Sonnia Orellana earned a win for the Red Raiders, defeating Leah Ticer in three sets, 6-0, 5-7, 6-4, at the No. 3 spot.
