After four postponements, Texas Tech baseball coach Larry Hays won his 1,200th career game on Wednesday against West Texas A&M. The Red Raiders pounded out 14 hits in the 14-3 victory to start the 2000 season.
Hays is just the ninth coach in NCAA Division I baseball history to reach the 1,200-win mark. His career now stands at 1,200-640-2 in 30 seasons. He is also just one of four active coaches to achieve the milestone.
Tech erupted in the second inning on a grand slam by first basemen David O'Keeffe. O'Keefe, a senior, launched a blast over the left field fence. Chaz Eiguren started the big inning with a walk and was followed by Brennan Burns. Burns was hit by a pitch and Scott Holzhauer walked to load the bases for O'Keeffe.
The Red Raiders went deep into the pitching staff using seven hurlers. Starter Brandon Roberson was credited with the win, but left the game with a muscle strain in his throwing arm. Steve Rowe and Josh Jones combined to fan five batters in two combined inning pitched.
At the plate, five players recorded multihit games with second baseman Shaun Larkin going 3-4 with a run scored. Marco Cunningham, Miles Durham, O'Keeffe and Jason Rainey each had a pair of hits.
Texas Tech will be in action this weekend at Dan Law Field when they entertain New Mexico State. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams will tangle at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday and 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
