In the Sunday finale of the three-game series at Long Beach State, the Texas Tech Red Raiders lost, 8-0, in a rain-shortened game. With one out in the top of the eighth, a downpour started and the game was called 10 minutes later. The Red Raiders lost for the fourth straight time and lowered their record to 6-6 on the season.
Texas Tech was unable to take advantage of five walks and left four runners on base in the first three innings. The 49er's got on the board in the third inning with a pair of runs off Tech starter Josh Jones. Long Beach State came back in the fourth with three more scores to chase Jones with two outs. Cory Metzler came into relieve Jones and allowed three runs on six hits over 3.1 innings. Jones suffered his second loss of the season as he allowed five runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings pitched.
The Red Raiders biggest threat came in the third inning when leadoff hitter Marco Cunningham and Scott Holzhauer drew back-to-back walks. However, the threat ended two batters later as Chaz Eiguren flew out to right and Shaun Larkin grounded into a double play.
Eiguren, Larkin and Cory Sellars each had a hit to lead Texas Tech as the Long Beach State pitching staff held the Red Raiders scoreless in the final two games of the series (17.0 innings).
Tech was shutout in back-to-back games for the first time in nearly 10 years. Texas A&M held the Red Raiders scoreless in two straight games on March 23-24, 1990. The Aggies won the games 11-0 and 7-0 in College Station.
Texas Tech will wrap-up the road trip with a game on Tuesday at New Mexico. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. MST (3 p.m. CST) at Lobo Field in Albuquerque. The Red Raiders will open up conference play at Dan Law Field next weekend as they host Missouri. The series will open at 4 p.m. on Friday in Lubbock. Games two and three of that series will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
