Lady Raiders Look For Season Sweep Of Texas

LUBBOCK, Tex. - No. 7 Texas Tech will travel to Texas for a 7 p.m. game at the Frank Erwin Center. It will be the 59th meeting between the two schools.
The Lady Raiders
Texas Tech owns a 21-3 mark and 10-3 in Big 12 play. Senior Aleah Johnson leads the Lady Raiders in scoring with a 13.9 average followed by freshman Plenette Pierson at 13.5, senior Keitha Dickerson at 12.5 and junior Katrisa O'Neal at 11.3. Dickerson is Tech's top rebounder as she is averaging 10.2 boards per outing, which is first in the Big 12. Senior Melinda Schmucker-Pharies has a team-high 128 assists, while Pierson owns a team-best 17 blocks and O'Neal has 83 steals.
The Lady Raiders are shooting 43.4 percent from the field, 28.7 percent from the three-point arc and 60.7 percent from the charity stripe.
Scouting the Opponent
Texas enters the game with a 17-9 record and 8-5 in Big 12 play after losing at Colorado, 79-75, last Saturday. In that game, senior Edwina Brown led the Longhorns with 22 points followed by sophomore Tracy Cook with 13 and freshman Tai Dillard with 10 points. Cook and junior Carla Littleton each had 10 rebounds, while Brown had game highs of nine assists and five steals. Texas shot 44.8 percent (30-67) from the field, 42.9 percent (3-7) from three-point range and 85.7 percent (12-14) from the free throw line.
On the year, Brown paces the Longhorns in scoring with a 21.3 average followed by freshman Alisha Sare at 11.8 and junior JoRuth Woods at 9.7. Brown is also the top rebounder, grabbing 7.9 boards per contest. Brown has team highs of 154 assists and 75 steals, while Littleton is the top shot blocker with 57 blocks.
The Longhorns are shooting 43.2 percent from the field, 34.5 percent from three-point range and 68.2 percent from the charity stripe.
Jody Conradt is in her 24th season at the helm of the Longhorns, establishing a record of 625-169. She is also in her 30th year as a she head coach with a record of 743-231.
Series Record
It is the 59th meeting between Texas Tech and Texas with the Longhorns holding a 44-14 advantage. Tech is 14-31 in the Marsha Sharp era. The Lady Raiders were victorious the in the first meeting this year, 73-44, in Lubbock on Feb. 3. Tech has won two straight games with Texas. Texas' last win was Feb. 6, 1999 in a 74-70 triumph in Austin.
Last Time vs. Texas
February 3, 2000 - Lubbock, Texas - Senior Aleah Johnson scored 20 points as No. 9 Texas Tech beat Texas 73-44.
Johnson went to the bench in foul trouble with 5:16 left in the half, but by that time Texas Tech was ahead 40-16. Texas was unable to take advantage, as both teams were scoreless over the last five minutes of the half.
Texas got no closer than 18 points in the second half. Edwina Brown, with 18 points, was the only Texas player in double figures.
Freshman Plenette Pierson contributed 15 points and senior Keitha Dickerson had 10 points and 14 rebounds for Tech. Senior guard Melinda Schmucker-Pharies added 13 points, including three three-pointers.

A Look Back
Senior Keitha Dickerson scored 23 points in leading No. 12 Texas Tech to a 86-81 victory over No. 20 Oklahoma last Saturday.
Tech had seven free throws during the final minute as foul trouble caused the Sooners to lose Caton Hill four minutes after losing Phylesha Whaley.
Tech led 36-29 at halftime but Oklahoma used a 21-8 run early in the second half to get even at 50-50. Stacey Dales' basket put the Sooners ahead 52-50 with 14:08 to play.
Thirty seconds later, Dickerson tied the game with a field goal, and senior Aleah Johnson made a free throw moments later to put the Lady Raiders ahead for good.
Freshman Plenette Pierson contributed 18 points for Tech and Johnson, senior Melinda Schmucker-Pharies and junior Katrisa O'Neal each contributed 12.
LaNeishea Caufield led the Sooners with 29. Stacey Dales added 22 and Whaley 18.
Lady Raider Head Coach Marsha Sharp
One of the most respected and well-known coaches in Texas Tech history, head coach Marsha Sharp is 427-132 in her 18th year at the helm of the Lady Raiders. The 1999 Big 12 Coach of the Year, for the second consecutive year, has led the Lady Raiders to 12 NCAA Tournament appearances, including 10 consecutive, and five NCAA Sweet 16 appearances and the NCAA National Championship in 1993. While in the SWC, coach Sharp and the Lady Raiders never finished below third, they won or shared the last five championships, and they captured three Post-Season Classic titles. Sharp claimed her 400th career victory last season in the 83-71 win at Colorado on Feb. 24, 1999.
A 1974 graduate of Wayland Baptist University, Sharp was named the National Coach of the Year in 1993 and 1994. She also reaped SWC Coach of the Year honors seven times, five consecutively.

As of games through Feb. 21, Texas Tech is fourth in the nation in scoring defense at 53.4. Tech is also 12th in won-lost percentage (.875) and 17th in scoring margin (14.5)
Junior Katrisa O'Neal is 15th in steals with a 3.5 average and senior Keitha Dickerson ranks 24th in rebounding with a 10.2 average.
30 Straight Big 12 Wins at Home
Texas Tech currently holds a 30-game winning streak for Big 12 home games. The Lady Raiders hold a 30-1 record in Big 12 games played in Lubbock. The last time and the only Big 12 home loss came against Oklahoma State in a 78-56 loss Jan. 8, 1997.
11th Straight 20-Win Season
With the victory over Nebraska Feb. 16, Texas Tech claimed its 11th straight 20-win season and its 15th 20-win season under head coach Marsha Sharp. During the Sharp era, Tech has compiled three 30-win seasons, including last year's record of 30-4.
Big 12 Player of the Week
Senior Keitha Dickerson was named the Big 12 Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week for games from Feb. 14-20. She averaged 17.5 points and 9.0 rebounds while leading Texas Tech to wins over Nebraska and No. 18/20 Oklahoma. She connected on 13-of-20 field goal attempts for a .650 percentage and 9-of-14 free throws for a .643 percentage. Dickerson also contributed eight assists and four steals.
Dickerson Scores Career High
Senior Keitha Dickerson scored a career-high 23 points in the Lady Raiders win over No. 18 Oklahoma Feb. 19. Her previous career high was 21, which she had scored twice in her career.
Most Points Score in Conference Play
Texas Tech's 86 points scored against Oklahoma Feb. 19 was the most the Lady Raider have scored against at Big 12 opponent and the second highest of the season. Tech scored 102 points vs. Southwest Texas State Nov. 26.
4-1 on TV
Texas Tech is now 4-1 when playing live on television. Tech started off the season beating LSU on Lifetime Television and then beat Kansas and Texas A&M on FOX Sports Nets and Oklahoma on espn2 all in Lubbock, while losing at Iowa State FOX Sports Net.
Double Digits for Starters
All five starters scored in double figures in the victory over Oklahoma Feb. 19. Senior Keitha Dickerson led the way with a career-high 23 points, followed by freshman Plenette Pierson with 18, seniors Aleah Johnson and Melinda Schmucker-Pharies and junior Katrisa O'Neal each scored 12 points.
Getting the Minutes
This season, Texas Tech has been putting their starters to work. Four of the five are averaging 31-plus minutes a game, while two of them are averaging more that 34 minutes a game. Senior Melinda Schmucker-Pharies is averaging 35.5 minutes a game followed by senior Keitha Dickerson at 34.1, junior Katrisa O'Neal at 33.4, senior Aleah Johnson at 31.8 and freshman Plenette Pierson at 27.2 minutes per contest.
No. 12 for Dickerson
Senior Keitha Dickerson once again recorded a double-double as she scored 12 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in the Lady Raiders' win over Nebraska Feb. 16. It was her third straight double-double and her fourth in five games.
Dickerson Up to Sixth
Senior Keitha Dickerson tallied 15 rebounds vs. Nebraska Feb. 16 to move her into sixth on Tech's all-time career list for rebounds. She currently has 757 career rebounds. Standing in fifth is Reena Lynch (86-90) with 887.
Season Highs
Senior Keitha Dickerson tied her season high of 15 rebounds, while junior Katrisa O'Neal matched her season-high seven rebounds vs. Nebraska Feb. 16 and vs. Oklahoma Feb. 19.
10th and 11th Double-Double for Dickerson
Senior Keitha Dickerson recorded her 10th double-double of the season at Missouri Feb. 8 as she scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the Lady Raiders' 52-49 loss in Columbia, Mo. Dickerson then came back and chipped in 14 points and 11 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season vs. Texas A&M.
Looking to Move Up
Senior Melinda Schmucker-Pharies needs 12 assists to tie Krista Kirkland (89-93) for first on Tech's all-time career list for assists at 553, while junior Katrisa O'Neal needs 19 steals to tie Noel Johnson (91-95) for second on the Lady Raiders' all-time career list for steals at 264.
Home Court Streak
The Lady Raiders currently hold a 27-home game winning streak. Tech's streak ranks them third among NCAA Division I home-court winning streaks. Grambling currently has the number one streak at 64 games.
A Look Ahead
Tech travel to Oklahoma State Feb. 26 for a 7 p.m. game. The last regular season game will be at the United Spirit Arena on Feb. 29 vs. Baylor at 7 p.m. The Big 12 Conference Tournament will take place in Kansas City, Mo. March 7-11 at the Municipal Auditorium.
