LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech softball team returns to action for the first time in nearly two weeks when they travel to Las Cruces, N.M. for the Troy Cox Tournament this weekend. The tournament, hosted by New Mexico State University, runs Friday through Sunday. The Raiders get things started when they face No. 22 Illinois-Chicago in the first game on Friday, February 25 at 1 p.m. (CST).
The Raiders (2-10) come into the weekend having won two of their last three games. The team started the season 0-9 but then came back to beat arch-rival Texas 4-0 and nationally ranked Hofstra 3-2 two weeks ago at the Paradise Classic Tournament in Hawaii.
In Las Cruces the Red Raiders will face nationally ranked teams in Illinois-Chicago and Oregon State (No. 11) as well as games against Penn State and McNeese State. The game against McNeese is scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday evening. Tech plays Oregon State at 9 a.m. Saturday then matches up against Penn State at 3 p.m. the same day. The tournament continues Saturday evening and Sunday morning, February 27, with bracket games to decide the tournament champion.
The Raiders will be led by the pitching of Junior Amanda Renfro (1-5, 1.74 ERA) and the bat of Senior shortstop Paula Workman(.286). Renfro currently has pitched 16.1 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run and is on pace to set a new school single-season record for strikeouts. Workman is second on the team in batting and is tied for the tam lead with five RBI.
