Red Raiders make history, rally to top Ole Miss in extras
May 16, 2026 | Softball
An eight-run seventh inning propels Tech to its second-straight Regional Championship Game
Seven Red Raiders recorded hits led by Jasmyn Burns who went 3-for-5 with an RBI and Lauren Allred who went 2-for-3, both hits coming in the bottom of the seventh, with what might be the most clutch hit in her career up to this point, a grand slam to tie the game. Jackie Lis went 1-for-2 with a two-run homer and also drew three walks.
NiJaree Canady and Samantha Lincoln combined for seven strikeouts as Canady picked up her 23rd win of the season. Both pitchers had their highs and lows, each allowing seven hits, but were able to keep the Rebels offense at bay when it mattered most. Tech's defense was phenomenal behind its pitchers, posting another zero-error game on 15 chances.
How it Happened:
For 6.2 innings, the game was all Ole Miss. The Rebels got a lead-off home run, a three-run homer in the fourth and then four more runs in the seventh all while their ace Emilee Boyer allowed just two hits through six innings as they looked to be cruising to an appearance in the regional final on Sunday.
Tech had been shut out in five of its six losses and were on the verge of making six of seven before the Red Raiders decided to change its fate.
Allred led off the bottom of the seventh with a single through the left side, the next two Red Raiders got out leaving little hope for the Texas Tech faithful. Kaitlyn Terry worked a full-count and got an RBI single to avoid the shutout and Lis homered to make it 8-3 and have folks sit up in their chairs a bit.
Burns, Mia Williams and Taylor Pannell all singled to make it 8-4 and Desirae Spearman drew a walk to load to the bases. With bases juiced and two outs, Allred wasted no time striking the first pitch over the left field fence to tie the game at 8-8 leaving Tech and Ole Miss fans in awe of what they had witnessed.
A shocked Ole Miss didn't lay down though as they pieced together a pair of hits and worked the small game to retake the lead 9-8 in the top of the eighth. Terry and Lis led off the inning seeing eight pitches and eight balls to put two on with no outs. A red-hot Burns came up to bat and dropped to one knee to line a ball into center field and tie the game. Williams hit a fly ball deep to right field that moved Lis from second to third and Pannell followed suit with a fly ball to right to bring home Lis for the gaming-winning run as they capped off the most epic comeback in NCAA Regionals history.
UP NEXT: Red Raiders will play the winner of Saturday's game three at 3 p.m. tomorrow. TV is still to be determined.
