Tech Drops First Game At Nebraska 11-0

The Texas Tech Red Raiders lost the first game of the three-game set at Nebraska on Friday night 11-0 at Buck Beltzer Stadium. Nebraska pitcher Shane Komine fanned 13 batters over eight innings and held Texas Tech to just two hits. After entering the weekend in a five-way tie for third in the Big 12, Tech dropped to a two-way for seventh with the loss on Friday night.
The Cornhuskers jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three innings as they chased Tech starter J.J. Newman in the third. Newman allowed five runs on three hits and a season-high six walks in 2.1 innings pitched. The Red Raiders used a total of five pitchers in the game.
Komine was unhittable as he struck out two batters in each of the first five innings. Tech's only scoring threat came in the eighth inning while down 11-0. Marco Cunningham started the inning with a walk and was moved to second on catcher's interference with Brennan Burns at the plate. A ground out by Cory Sellars moved both runners up, but the inning ended with a Scott Holzhauer ground out to first.
Chad Landry and Trey Lunsford recorded the two hits for Texas Tech. Chaz Eiguren's season-high 12-game hitting ended after going 0-3. Eiguren was walked in his final at bat in the ninth inning. Four Tech relievers went 5.2 innings, allowing six runs on 10 hits, two walks and four strikeouts.
Texas Tech is now 16-14 overall and 5-5 in the Big 12. The Red Raiders and Cornhuskers while play two nine-inning games on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. Texas Tech will host TCU on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Dan Law Field.
