In one of the best starts by a Texas Tech pitcher this season, left-hander Blake McGinley came out on the losing end, 2-0, at Oklahoma State on Friday night. McGinley allowed seven hits and walked one over 7.1 innings, but Cowboy starter Matt Smith went one step further by striking out 13 in his first shutout of the season.
McGinley and Smith matched each other pitch-for-pitch until the Cowboys scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh. Texas Tech was able to get runners on base in seven of the nine innings, but stranded all nine runners.
The Red Raiders threatened in the sixth as Shaun Larkin started the inning with a single. He moved to second on a Marco Cunningham sacrifice bunt and to third on a ground out by Chaz Eiguren. Larkin was stranded at third when Jason Rainey looked at strike three.
In the seventh, Oklahoma State scored their two runs on three hits. Carlos Gautreaux, the Big 12's leading hitter, started the inning with a double and scored one batter later when Luke Scott singled to centerfield. After Scott moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, he scored on a double by Curt Anthony.
Texas Tech threatened in the top of the ninth with Trey Lunsford at second and Miles Durham at first. Smith finished the game by inducing a ground out to first by pinch hitter Brennan Burns.
The second game of the final conference series of the season will be Saturday night at 7 p.m. The Red Raiders dropped to 32-21 overall and 17-11 in the Big 12 while Oklahoma State improved into 35-19 and 13-12.
