For the second time in as many days, the Texas Tech bats were held silent by an Oklahoma State left-hander in Stillwater. Cowboy pitcher Josh Merrigan duplicated the performance by Matt Smith in the first game of the series by shutting out the Red Raiders on five hits and nine strikeouts Saturday evening. Tech was also shutout in back-to-back games earlier this season at Long Beach State.
Oklahoma State broke open a scoreless game with two runs in the fourth inning on a two-run home run by Luke Scott. Prior to allowing the home run, Texas Tech starter Cory Metzler had retired 10 of 12 batters. The Cowboys added a run in the fifth on a solo shot by Mike Lorsbach and two more in the seventh on a sacrifice fly and home run by Curt Anthony.
The Red Raiders biggest threat came in the top of second inning when they loaded the bases with one out. David O'Keeffe and Shaun Larkin started the threat with back-to-back singles. Both runners moved up a base on a walk by Trey Lunsford. Merrigan then struck out Mark Austry and induced a ground out by Scott Holzhauer to end the inning.
From that point, Merrigan shut down the Tech hitters, allowing just five base runners over the final seven frames. The game ended when O'Keefe lined into an unassisted double play by Scott at first base.
Metzler suffered his third loss of the year after allowing five run on seven and four strikeouts. Cory Sellars struck out the only batter he faced in 0.1 innings of relief. At the plate, Larkin was the only Tech hitter with more than one hit as he went 2-3.
The final game of the series will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday. With the loss, the Red Raiders drop to 32-22 overall and 17-12 in the conference. Tech will play in the 5 p.m. game on Wednesday as the fifth seed in the Big 12 Tournament. With Oklahoma losing, 12-11, at Iowa State on Saturday, the Red Raiders could possibly face the Sooners on Wednesday. If Oklahoma loses on Sunday at Iowa State, the Red Raiders will play the Sooners. If Oklahoma wins, Texas Tech will face the Texas Longhorns.
