LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech defensive back Kevin Curtis has been named as a first-team preseason All-America selection by Football News, the magazine announced today.
A junior from Lubbock-Coronado High School, Curtis led Texas Tech and the Big 12 in tackles last season with 153 total stops, 93 solo, from his safety position. He also recorded three interceptions, three tackles for loss and broke up six passes on the way to an all-conference selection.
"I'm proud of Kevin. Obviously the kind of season he had last year made somebody stand up and take notice," head coach Mike Leach said. "We have high expectations he is going to have an even better year in 2000, but better than that, Kevin has even higher expectations for himself."
Curtis is one of four Big 12 players selected to the preseason first team defense. Also tabbed were defensive linemen Shaun Rogers of Texas and Justin Smith of Missouri, along with linebacker Jashon Sykes of Colorado. Offensive lineman Ross Hochstein of Nebraska and place kicker Jamie Rheem of Kansas State were named to the first team offense.
