This Week's Action
Tech continues its six-game road swing to start the season with a 4 p.m. match at TCU on Tuesday, Aug. 29. The Red Raiders then head to Baton Rouge, La., for a pair of weekend matches versus LSU and Mississippi on Friday and Sunday, respectively. Friday's game against the Bengal Tigers is set for 7 p.m. at the LSU Soccer Complex. Sunday's match against Mississippi is scheduled for 11 a.m. in Baton Rouge.
TCU (1-1) defeated Houston on the road last Friday before dropping a 1-0 decision at home to Baylor on Sunday to start the campaign.
The Horned Frogs hold a 2-4-2 edge in the all-time series, winning 2-1 in overtime last season in Fort Worth on Sept.24. Tech's Carrie Graham tallied the first goal of the match in the 40th minute on a cross from Lindsay Thompson, with Jamie Woods also assisting on the goal. TCU knotted the score at one with a goal in the 76th minute, then scored the game-winner with just three minutes remaining in overtime.
The only previous meeting between the Tech and LSU came on Sept. 4, 1995, with the Red Raiders taking a 2-1 victory in Lubbock. LSU (2-0) won a pair of matches on the road this past weekend to open its season. The Tigers won 4-0 at Troy State on Friday, then defeated Louisiana-Monroe 4-2 on Sunday.
The Red Raiders and Rebels have met twice, with each squad taking one match. Mississippi posted a victory in the previous meeting, a 3-2 decision in Lubbock on August 31, 1997.
The Rebels (0-2) started the season on the West Coast this past weekend, dropping a pair of games. San Diego State defeated Mississippi 2-1 on Friday. Pepperdine handed the Rebels a 1-0 loss in double overtime in Malibu, Calif., on Sunday.
Tech opens its home schedule on Thursday, Sept. 14, against West Texas A&M at 4 p.m. at R.P. Fuller Stadium.
Red Raiders Drop Season-Opener, 1-0
The Texas Tech soccer team lost its season opener Sunday afternoon on the road at North Texas, dropping a 1-0 decision to the Mean Green.
Teresa Vise scored unassisted in the 93rd minute with a 20-yard boot for the only goal of the match, as North Texas picked up the win despite Texas Tech outshooting the Mean Green, 15-5.
The Red Raiders had several chances to put the ball in the back of the net during the contest according to head coach Felix Oskam. Tech hit the post on two occasions during the match and played very well for 90 minutes, but came up a little unlucky in its opening match of the 2000 campaign.
"We played well enough to win. We just couldn't put the ball in the net," Oskam said. "Some days you find ways to get the ball in the net, but we were not lucky today.
"They had one beautiful shot, and we just couldn't do very much about it."
The Red Raiders kept North Texas goalkeeper Monica Housden very busy, as Housden ended the match with nine saves. The Tech defense played well, limiting the Mean Green to just five shots and forcing keeper JoDee Campbell to make only one save during the match.
Seven Home Matches on 2000 Slate
The Red Raiders will play seven home matches at R.P. Fuller Stadium this season, beginning Thursday, Sept. 14, with a 4 p.m. match against West Texas A&M. Tech then hosts Tulsa at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 17, before beginning conference play.
Tech hosts Big 12 opponents Oklahoma and Oklahoma State on Sept. 29 and Oct. 1, respectively. The Red Raiders then play three of their last four regular season matches at home, hosting Baylor (Oct. 15), Iowa State (Oct. 20) and Nebraska (Oct. 22).
Head Coach Felix Oskam
Felix Oskam enters the 2000 season with a three-year record of 22-29-4. Previously, Oskam had served as an assistant coach for the team during the 1995 and 1996 seasons.
Prior to coming to Tech in 1995, Oskam served for three years as an assistant coach for both the men's and women's programs at the University of Tulsa. During the 1993 season, the Tulsa women's program finished ranked 18th in the nation. In 1991, the Tulsa men's team achieved a national ranking of 17th. Oskam is currently a staff coach and instructor for the North Texas Soccer Association and the Region III Olympic Development Program (ODP). He also worked as a staff coach for the ODP in Oklahoma and coached the Blackwatch `80 girls select team in Tulsa.
