The 2001 campaign for the Texas Tech women's tennis squad has its best start in school history since 1994 and the best start under coach Virginia Brown. The Red Raiders finish the weekend by defeating Oral Roberts 8-0, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 8-0 and the University of North Texas 5-0 at the Abilene Christian Ladies Indoor Invitational in Abilene, Texas.
"We're excited we are 3-0. Although the weather conditions were the coldest we ever played under. Alenka (Ovin) could not feel her racquet in the final match against North Texas," said head coach Virginia Brown. "I am very pleased with the top part of our line-up. I only hope we can maintain what we did this weekend because we know it is only going to get tougher. This was a good confidence builder for our squad."
The No. 13 ranked Southwest region Red Raiders won each match in only two-sets. No. 27-ranked Alenka Ovin won all three matches at the No. 1 position. Transfer sophomore Barbara Schraml ranked No. 30 in the Southwest region won three straight in the No. 2 position. The deadly duo teamed-up in doubles action in the No. 1 position to win each match 8-6, 8-3 and 8-4.
Sophomore Sonnia Orellana competed in the No. 4 position in which she held each opponent she faced scoreless.
The Red Raiders look to continue their winning ways on Wed., Jan. 31 in Lubbock as they battle Abilene Christian.
