Tech Volleyball Squares Off With Iowa State/Kansas

RED RAIDERS LOOK TO IMPROVE BIG 12 RECORD
Texas Tech will be looking to improve their 1-2 overall record in Big 12 play this week as the team hosts Iowa State on Wednesday and travels to Kansas on Saturday. Tech will be playing its third and fourth consecutive matches against opponents from the Big 12 North Division. The Red Raiders last outing in Big 12 play was a three-game loss to Colorado in Boulder last Wednesday night.
The Big 12 had plenty of upsets this past weekend particularly in the state of Kansas as the Jayhawks upset Colorado in four games while Kansas State upset No. 23 Texas in four. Texas Tech did not play on Saturday as this was Tech's scheduled off-weekend from Big 12 play.
A LOOK AT THE CYCLONES
The Iowa State Cyclones (3-6, 0-4) will come to Lubbock on Wednesday night in hopes of putting an end to a five-match losing streak. The Cyclones last win came against Wisconsin-Green Bay on Sept. 8th. Iowa State's five match losing streak includes losses to Morehead State, Kansas, Texas, Nebraska and Texas A&M.
The Cyclones are led by junior outside hitter Mandi Harms as the Senandoah, Iowa native has 102 kills on the season, 32 digs and 12 total blocks. Defensively the Cyclones are paced by Brittany Dalager who has 121 digs.
Iowa State is coached by Linda Crum.
SCOUTING KANSAS
Texas Tech will travel to Lawrence, Kansas over the weekend for a Saturday match with the Kansas Jayhawks. Kansas has been extremely tough at home this season as the Hawks are a perfect 6-0 (entering the week) in the friendly confines of the Horjesi Athletics Center. The Jayhawks are 11-2 (entering the week) overall and have a 2-2 mark in the Big 12. The Jayhawks have wins over Iowa State and Colorado but have dropped matches to Oklahoma and Texas.
Kansas is led by Sarah Rome who has tallied 147 kills and .280 hitting. Defensively, the Jayhawks are led by Danielle McHenry who has 107 digs on the young season.
Kansas is coached by Ray Bechard.
ORZEN EDGES CLOSER TO HILGERS
Senior setter Skydra Orzen moved into second place on the career assist list thanks to 60 assists against Missouri on Sept. 19th. Orzen now has 3,704 career assists but is 2,107 assists away from Lisa Hilgers all-time mark of 5,811.
AGAINST IOWA STATE, KANSAS
The Red Raiders won both series last season against Iowa State and Kansas and only lost two games in the process. Texas Tech dropped Iowa State 3-0 in Lubbock on Oct. 18th and then again 3-0 on Nov. 25th in Ames. The Red Raiders had to pull off a five-game win against Kansas in Lawrence on Sept. 20th but had an easy time in Lubbock winning 3-0 on Nov. 8.
Texas Tech is 11-1 all-time against Iowa State and is 9-2 all-time against Kansas. Tech head coach Jeff Nelson is 11-0 versus Iowa State and 9-1 against Kansas.
TECH RESCHEDULES MATCHES
Texas Tech has rescheduled Big 12 matches with Texas and Nebraska and a non-conference match with New Mexico that were affected by the Sept. 11th tragedy in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. Texas Tech will play New Mexico on Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. and Texas on Oct. 15th at 6 p.m. Both matches will be played in the United Spirit Arena. Texas Tech has also rescheduled its match with Nebraska in Lincoln for Nov. 18th at 2 p.m.
TECH TO PLAY ISU IN PRACTICE GYM
Texas Tech will play its first-ever match in the United Spirit Arena practice gym this Wednesday against Iowa State. The volleyball team gave up the main floor in the arena so that the homecoming committee could have the floor for a homecoming concert. Rod Stewart will headline the homecoming concert on Thursday night but extra time was needed to set up for the show, so Tech volleyball agreed to play in the practice gym. The gym will seat approximately 600 fans.
THIS AND THAT
- The Red Raiders will play their first-ever game in the United Spirit Arena practice gym on Wednesday against Iowa State. The team gave up the main floor so that a Rod Stewart concert could be accommodated.
- Texas Tech is a perfect 6-0 at home this season and 20-2 all-time at the United Spirit Arena
- Head Coach Jeff Nelson is now nine wins away from earning his 150th career win as a head coach.
- Texas Tech has a combined record of 20-3 against Iowa State and Kansas.
- Texas Tech has played all four conference matches against teams from the Big 12 North Division.
- Texas Tech is just 1-4 on the road with its lone win coming against Rhode Island on a neutral court. Texas Tech has not won a true road match this season.
- Tech has three players with 100+ kills (Yolanda Cumbess, 149, Kelly Johnson, 133, and Melissa McGehee, 111) and three players with 100 + digs (Skydra Orzen, 106, Ann Romjue, 137, Melissa McGehee, 131).
- Texas Tech has committed 314 errors compared to 257 by its opponents.
