LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's tennis team will travel to Ft. Worth, Texas, on Thurs., Oct. 18 to compete in its biggest tournament of the fall season. The Red Raiders will be competing in the qualifying round of 128 in the Rolex Tournament at Texas Christian University Oct. 18-21.
"We're ready to play," head coach Virginia Brown said. "We've been practicing hard enough and we're ready for some tough competition."
Red Raider sophomore Irina Tereschenko, who advanced to round two of the singles qualifying at the Riviera All-American Championships earlier this month, heads into competition seeded eighth and will face UTSA's Sandra Mayr. Coming back from an injury suffered earlier this year, senior co-captain Alenka Ovin is seeded 27th and will square off with UTA's Katherine Warren.
"Alenka won her matches at the TCU Tournament in September," Brown said. "I think if she can play into the draw, she will have a good match."
The Rolex Tournament consists of 30 schools in the Southwest Region including all Big 12 Conference schools, with the University of Texas as the No. 1 seed. The tournament begins at 8:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19 and runs through Sunday, Oct. 21. Winners in this weekend's tournament will advance to the main draw Oct. 25-28 in Dallas, Texas.
