Women's Tennis Completes First Qualifying Round at Rolex Tournament

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's tennis team made a strong showing in the first qualifying round at the Rolex Tournament in Fort Worth, Texas on the campus of Texas Christian University.
Sophomore Irina Tereschenko, seeded No. 8 in the tournament, was victorious over Arkansas-Little Rock's Julietta Lillo in two sets, 6-2, 6-1, advancing her to the round of 32. Earlier in the round of 128, Tereschenko earned the rights to move on as she defeated Sandra Mayr of the University of Texas at San Antonio, 6-1,6-1.
No. 26 seed and senior co-captain Alenka Ovin also advanced to the round of 32 with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over UALR's Cecilia Poveda. Ovin's earlier first round match proved more difficult as she earned a tough, three set victory over Katherine Warren of the University of Texas at Arlington, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6.
Junior Barbara Schraml, seeded No. 29, also proved formidable as she reserved her spot in the round of 64 with a two set triumph over UTEP's Elisa Bjorklund, 6-0, 6-2. In the earlier round of 128, Schraml blanked Christian Kincannon of the University of Arkansas, winning every single game in a dominating 6-0, 6-0 victory.
Sophomore Kendall Brooks faced No. 7 seed Katrin Gaber of TCU in the round of 64, but was ousted in two sets, 6-0, 6-1. Brooks earned the rights to play Gaber after an impressive, three set victory over Robyn Bassett, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 in her first match.
Tournament play resumes Saturday, Oct. 20 in Fort Worth, Texas on the TCU campus.
