LUBBOCK, TEXAS - Texas Tech women's tennis player Irina Tereschenko is traveling to Palisades, Calif., to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's 2001 Riviera Women's All-American Championship this weekend. The sophomore will be competing in singles qualifying Oct. 9-10, she enters the tournament as the 16th seed.
The 2001 Riviera Women's All-American Championship is the first tennis championship of the fall season and features the top women's players in NCAA Division I tennis with all the top 10 players from ITA's preseason singles top 100 highlighting the competition.
Tereschenko is the only Red Raider selected by ITA's Regional Chairs to compete in the tournament. "I am excited. I am the only one from the team to compete in the championship so it's an honor," said Tereschenko, "There's some pressure there but the whole point of tennis is to overcome pressure and to win."
Women's head coach Virginia Brown is excited that Tereschenko is ranked 16th and competing in the championship. "We're all really excited for her. She has been working really hard, practicing with the men's team for this championship," Coach Brown said, "No one else in the NCAA has done that."
The sophomore from Moscow, Russia, was ranked 60th in ITA's preseason singles top 100 earlier this month and is one of only two Big 12 women's tennis players to compete in the All-American championships this weekend. If Tereschenko wins in the singles qualifying round, she will advance to the Main Draw singles competition Oct. 11-14.
The women's tennis team was originally scheduled to travel to Waco, Texas, to compete in the Baylor Tournament this weekend but it has been cancelled due to a schedule conflict with the Riviera Women's All-American Championship.
