Texas Tech Press Conference Quotes October 8, 2001 Mike Leach/Ricky Williams
Mike Leach --
On getting past the loss to Kansas:
"I told them that they only get a few opportunities to embrace success in their life and that they need to do that. Our biggest thing is that as a team we have to expect more of ourselves."
"I think that we do the physical aspects pretty good and I think that we practice well, but we don't translate that to the field as good as we could. Saturday indicated that."
On if BJ Symons can lead the team if Kliff Kingsbury can't play:
"I think he can. BJ does a good job. The biggest thing is his reps, we need to get him his reps. BJ plays well and I have thought so from the beginning. Kliff does a good job because he's been here long, that is the biggest distinction."
On Kansas State:
"They will be really aggressive. They are big, fast and aggressive. They are a very aggressive team defensively, and offensively they run the ball well. You have got to keep an eye on the quarterback, because he runs around good, too."
On if losing Kingsbury and Lawrence Flugence caused the team to lose:
"I'm sure that losing both Kliff and Lawrence had an impact but that's no excuse, we just have to play better. It hurt to lose Lawrence but we had plenty of opportunities. It is on us. Kansas deserves a lot of credit for how they played. They are a good football team and showed they were."
Tech running back Ricky Williams
On what he did as a captain on Sunday:
"We got the team together and we spoke to them for awhile. Kliff, some of the other guys and I, most of all we worked a little harder than we normally do on Sundays."
On what he told the group:
"Let's put this game behind us and let's try to win some more. The main thing is for them to just have fun. I think that if they enjoy the game and get to learn the game more, then they will play better."
On the team:
"If we can just have faith in what we are doing on offense and defense, I think that it would help take away that low self-esteem. I know that the team has high self-esteem because I do. If I have it then everybody else has it, but overall I think that if we can just have faith in what we are doing and knowing going in that we can win the game, then we will be ok."
