FARMERS BRANCH, Texas - The Texas Tech women's tennis doubles team of junior Beverly Dawson and sophomore Irina Tereschenko advanced to the second round of consolation play at the Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, hosted by Southern Methodist University at the Brookhaven Country Club in Farmers Branch, Texas.
Representing Texas Tech women's tennis for the first time ever in a national tournament, Dawson and Tereschenko faced a must-win situation in their match against Missouri's Urska Juricand and Katia Sevcikove in the first round of consolation play. Using a never-say-die attitude, Dawson and Tereschenko ousted the Tiger tandem, 8-6, leaving the Red Raider duo as the only remaining Big 12 representative in doubles competition for the tournament.
In their first round match of the main draw, Dawson and Tereschenko faced a tough test as the duo took on No. 3 Janet Bergman and Bea Bielik of Wake Forest University. Trying to carry the momentum over from a tournament title at last month's Rolex Tournament, Dawson and Tereschenko fell to the third-seeded Demon Deacon team, 8-3, placing the duo in the consolation bracket.
The tandem will continue consolation play on Friday, while the rest of the team will begin competition at the ASU Thunderbirds Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Arizona State University in Tempe, Ariz.
