Tarr and Ellison Receive Big 12 Academic Honors

The Big 12 Conference takes great pleasure in honoring 50 student-athletes who have been named to the 2001 Women's Basketball Academic All-Big 12 Team, the conference office announced Tuesday, which included Texas Tech's Amber Tarr as a first-team selection and Tanisha Ellison a second-team honoree.
Tarr, a 6-0 guard from Ozona, Texas, was also a first-team selection last year, while Ellison, a 6-1 center from Houston, Texas, was a second-team honoree last year as well.
Many of these student-athletes will participate in the fifth Big 12 Conference Tournament March 6-8, 10 at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo. Oklahoma enters the event No. 1 seed and will be looking for its first win in the four-year history of the event. Iowa State is defending tournament champion.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the women's basketall academic all-league squad consisted of 37 combined first-team members with 13 on the second team. First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.2 or better grade-point average, while the second team are those who have a 3.0 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.0 grade point average or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are eligible.
