LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech soccer team opened its spring season this weekend, splitting a pair of matches in Albuquerque, N.M., against the University of New Mexico and Albuquerque United, a club team.
Tech dropped its first contest 2-1 to the University of New Mexico. The two teams played to a scoreless first half before junior Melanie Brosnahan gave the Red Raiders a 1-0 advantage early in the second half.
But the Lobos quickly tied the contest and won it just before time expired on the game clock.
We are disappointed with loss to UNM, because we were ahead 1-0 but two minutes later they tied it up," Tech head coach Felix Oskam said. "In the last 45 seconds they scored the game-winnner. Our goal was to start fresh this spring after a disappointing fall. As a team we need to find a way to finish off an opponent once we're ahead."
The Red Raiders rebounded to defeat Albuquerque United club team, 3-1. Goals from freshman Kerri Campbell and junior Marie Valdez gave Tech a 2-0 advantage at halftime, and sophomore Lindsey Wile put the Red Raiders ahead 3-0 in the second half.
"We played a little bit better in the second game," Oskam said, "but it might have come at a cost because junior Marie Valdez was injured and her health is a concern right now."
Tech will play a home match on March 25, as well as home matches on April 7-8 to conclude the spring season.
