LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech got another solid outing from Brandon Roberson and the offense cranked out 21 hits as the Red Raiders rolled past the Texas A&M Aggies 17-7 on Friday night before 4,686 fans at Dan Law Field.
With the win Texas Tech improved to 28-14 overall and 11-8 in the Big 12 and jolted up to fourth place in the Big 12 standings while Texas A&M fell to 24-15 overall and 9-7 in the league. Jason Rainey turned in a 4 for 5 performance at the plate while Austin Cranford, Gera Alvarez, Chad Landry and Nick Blankenship each turned in three hits on the night to pace the Red Raider offense.
Austin Cranford set the tone for the evening in Tech's first at-bat as he hit his second home run of the season, a solo shot over the left field wall. Texas Tech was able to capitalize on five Red Raider errors in the first three innings as the squad put up seven runs during that stretch.
The Red Raiders put the game out of reach in the bottom of the sixth when Tech took advantage of two crucial Aggie pitching mistakes. Kerry Hodges scored the first run of the inning on a wild pitch after hitting a triple to the right field gap. Aggie reliever Brian Finch walked Austin Cranford with the bases loaded to plate Tech's second run of the evening. Jason Rainey pulled the trigger in the next at-bat as he hit a single to left field that plated Tyler Carson and Chad Landry.
Texas Tech scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to end the game because of the Big 12 Conference 10-run rule. Senior hurler Brandon Roberson (8-3) tossed his third complete game of the season to pick up the win for the Red Raiders. Roberson gave up 11 hits and seven runs and struckout three Aggie batters.
Texas A&M's Matt Farnum suffered his third loss of the season after giving up two earned runs on seven hits in 2 2/3 innings of work. Neal Stephenson led the A&M offense with a 3 for 4 performance at the plate with a home run and two RBI.
Texas Tech and Texas A&M will play the second game of the series at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Dan Law Field. Texas Tech fans are encouraged to attend the softball game with Oklahoma at noon (Rocky Johnson Field) and the Red and Black Game (Football) at 7 p.m. at Lowry Field.
