Red Team Finishes Strong

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Black Team jumped out to a quick 14-7 lead after one quarter, but Tech's Red Team scored four times in the second quarter to take control of the game and come away with a 31-14 win in the annual Red-Black Game Saturday night at Lowery Field.
The Red Team consisted of first- and second-team members, while the Black Team was comprised mostly of third and fourth teamers and walk-ons.
Black Team quarterback B.J. Symons scored on a 13-yard scamper for the first score of the game. Two and a half minutes later, Eric Cooper (Red) picked off a Symons pass and returned it 45 yards for the Red Team's first score. Cooper returned two interceptions on the night for touchdowns.
Foy Munlin closed the first quarter with an eight-yard run and the Black Team's final score of the game.
Kicker Brandon Stroud got things going for the Red Team with a 38-yard field goal to open the second quarter. Carlos Francis tacked on Red's first offensive touchdown with an 11-yard scoring reception from Kliff Kingsbury.
Following Cooper's second interception return for a touchdown, Kingsbury hit Mickey Peters with a 21-yard scoring strike with 1:15 to play in the half.
Kliff Kingsbury led the Red Team with 28 completions on 38 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns. Symons led all passers with 274 yards on 22-of-35 passing. Trey Haverty led the Black Team and all receivers with 140 yards on nine catches, including a long reception of 53 yards. Carlos Francis led the Red Team with 56 yards on six catches and a touchdown reception. Mickey Peters had the other TD for Red.
Ricky Williams led all rushers with 36 yards on seven carries. He also caught five passes for 13 yards.
